SF Fender Reverb driver 12AT7 burns

Written by it11audio on . Posted in amp, blog

Several times I have had to replace a burnt 12AT7 on a Fender Silverface amp, reverb driver (Twin Reverb, Vibrolux etc.). I even had to change the reverb transformer on a Twin Reverb SF.

If we look at a Silverface schematic, we can see that the cathode resistance is low (470Ω for a Twin Reverb, 680Ω on a Vibrolux). This is probably related to the boost function implemented on these amps.

On a Blackface, there is a 2k2 resistor (+ a 25uF capacitor) at the cathode :

Here is the bias of the 12AT7 in the case of a Silverface Vibrolux :

The current flowing through the 12AT7 is: 6.7V / 680Ω = approx 10mA => 5mA per triode. The dissipated power per triode is (425V – 6,7V) x 5mA > 2W; we are close to the maximum (2,5W max) and moreover the maximum voltage at the anode should be 300V according to the datasheet ; I suppose that more than 400V and a power close to the maximum will lead to the death of the 12AT7.

On a Twin Reverb SF, I measured 450V at the anode and 7mA => 3.1W of dissipation per triode (this led to the death of several 12AT7s and eventually the reverb transformer).

On the other hand, on the Blackface, here is how it is biased :

Le courant traversant la 12AT7 est : 8V / 2200Ω = 3,6mA soit 1,8mA par triode. La puissance dissipée par triode est (425V – 6,7V) x 1,8mA = 0,75W ! Way cooler ! Et la 12AT7 s’en porte bien !

The current flowing through the 12AT7 is : 8V / 2200Ω = 3.6mA => 1.8mA per triode. The power dissipated per triode is (425V – 6.7V) x 1.8mA = 0.75W ! Way cooler for the 12AT7 !
